Our Team

All of our research assistants have been trained to perform our heart rate assessment protocol. Two assistants will be present during the study at all times and will be available to assist you during the protocol and answer any questions you may have.

Equipment and Procedures

Equipment & Lab: The sensor used in our heart rate assessment attaches to your earlobe via an ear clip (see images below). The device will then be secured to your arm using an arm band and connected to a laptop for data collection.

Our lab space is located in the IU Intelligent Systems Engineering Multidisciplinary Engineering and Sciences Hall (MESH). The study room is accessible by those with limited mobility and close to accessible private restrooms. We will provide you with different lighting options too choose from based on your personal preference.

Procedure:

  1. Upon your arrival, an assistant will meet you at the door and provide you with a parking pass.

  2. You will complete a COVID-19 screener before going to the lab.

  3. The assistant will describe the study, walk you through the consent process, and answer any questions you may have.

  4. Upon consenting, you will first complete a survey about your demographics and psychological wellbeing. All data will be protected and accessible only by the research team.

  5. The assistant will then guide you through the heart rate assessment during which you will be cued to move into 3 postures for 3 minutes each: lying down on a cot, sitting up in a chair, and standing.

  6. Afterwards you will remove the device and all equipment will be sterilized.

Note: You will be able to withdraw from the study at any time for any reason.

Study & incentive Schedule: The study will consist of three heart rate assessment sessions: Before your SSP participation, 1 week after SSP participation, and 4 weeks after SSP participation. There will be a $25 Amazon gift card incentive for completing each assessment and an additional $25 bonus if all 3 visits are completed (an opportunity for $100 total).

Clothing: While you are welcome to dress whatever way you like, we do recommend wearing comfortable clothing. We also suggest wearing pants or shorts since you will be lying down. Additionally, our study room can be slightly chilly at times, so a light jacket and pants are also recommended.

Since our PPG device will clip onto your ear lobe, we also advise that you avoid wearing earrings to your assessment. For people with gauges or irremovable piercings, we will work with you to find another part of the ear to measure from.
